Strike the Perfect Balance between Aggression and Solid Play
The Spanish Four Knights in 100 Lines
100 Repertoires: The Spanish Four Knights by Grandmaster José Gonzalez is the first course on this ancient, time-tested opening. On the surface, it is easy to play as it follows opening principles, thus making it ideal for beginners.
But it also offers intricacies and strategic depth that masters continue to explore. It’s easy to learn for beginners, but it’s by no means only for them. You can take this opening all the way up to attaining your Grandmaster title!
The best part – you will learn this intuitive yet rich opening in just 100 lines.
You start out solid by developing both your knights and controlling the center, getting ready to castle. Then you throw in 4.Bb5 to hit Black on one of their key pressure points.
It’s compact and highly effective with clear-cut middlegame strategies.

What are some of the ideas inside?
♞ Restrict Black’s choices after 4.Bb5 and save yourself from heavy study – Black will have limited options after this move and you avoid the theory-heavy variations of the Ruy Lopez
♞ Pin Black’s knight on g5 and watch them struggle to get out of it – allowing you to seize control of the crucial central d5 square
♞ Acquire middlegame strategies that apply to several openings -the ideas of what you are doing are intuitive and you will be able to apply them to a broad range of positions
♞ Place immediate pressure on the e5 pawn – Black will have to find a way to defend or counterattack, with many natural responses being easily punished mistakes
♞ Play with the element of surprise – it is far less popular than the Ruy Lopez, Italian, and Scotch, so opponents will be far less booked up and will slip up much more easily
Championship-level training distilled in an easy-to-understand format
Author GM José Gonzalez only started playing tournaments at the late age of 13, far beyond when most future GMs start competing.
This makes his instruction particularly suitable for beginners, anyone starting late, or those who have limited study time, as he understands what goes into improving as a latecomer.
